Miamisburg Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening in Miamisburg

Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures. It’s safe, non-invasive and provides fantastic results by removing stains and yellowing from the teeth in just a single appointment.

At Miamisburg Family Dental, Dr. William Almoney and Dr. Gerald Brown offer at-home teeth whitening.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

There are many different types of teeth whitening treatments from toothpaste, to mouthwash, whitening strips, trays and more. Though these are all different methods, they all use the same basic principles to whiten your teeth.

At Miamisburg Family Dental, our teeth whitening services use powerful chemical agents called peroxides to combat stains on your tooth enamel. When a peroxide contacts a tooth stain, it breaks the chemical bonds that hold the stain onto the tooth, thereby “bleaching” the tooth and restoring the white enamel.

What Cosmetic Issues Can Be Treated by Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening can treat all kinds of external stains on the teeth. The most common stains treated by teeth whitening products include:

  • Yellowing caused by the natural aging process of enamel

  • Consumption of beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine

  • Eating darkly-colored fruits such as raspberries and blueberries

  • Yellowing and stains from tobacco use (smoking, chewing tobacco, etc.)

However, internal stains, such as stains caused by the antibiotics tetracycline and doxycycline as well as root canals and metal fillings cannot be treated with teeth whitening products. Typically, these stains must be addressed by another cosmetic treatment, such as a dental bonding, veneers or a tooth-colored crown.

What’s the Difference Between At-Home and In-Office Teeth Whitening?

At-home teeth whitening delivers great results. The primary difference is how long treatment will take.

At-home teeth whitening consists of a number of custom-built whitening trays, supplied to you by one of our doctors. You can wear these trays as directed by Dr. Brown or Dr. Almoney in the comfort of your own home. While it usually takes longer to see results, at-home teeth whitening is equally as effective as in-office treatments.
